A good rule of thumb is shrubs that bloom in late spring (old wood) should be pruned right after flowering. Shrubs that bloom on the current season’s growth (new wood) should be pruned in late winter or early spring before growth begins. Pruning should be avoided in fall because pruning wounds will remain open over winter which could cause drying and dieback at the pruning site. As with any good rule of thumb there are always exceptions; to learn more please view the pruning trees and shrubs.Extension > Horticulture

Smooth hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) can be pruned to the first set of buds above ground. Panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) can also be pruned in spring to retain form, generally by removing lateral branches.Extension > Horticulture
